Summer Feast at Sweetwater Clubhouse

How Three Parks Foster Friendship and Festivity Together

By Susan Slater

There are places tucked away where community isa force that shapes daily lives. On Chancey Road—Southern Charm, Sweetwater, and Settlers Rest RV Parkshave traded fences for friendships sharing a calendarofactivities.

The annual Summer Feast was held at the Sweetwater’sclubhouse starting well before the tables were set. Jeanette Smith and other volunteers—worked late into the evening preparing the menu: pulled pork, cowboy beans, and potato salad.

At 7:50 am, the day of the feast, Jeanette and the volunteers returned to the clubhouse, for the final rounds of preparation. Life, however, has a way of disrupting even the best-laid plans. Shortly after arriving at the clubhouse, Jeanette began to experience extreme pain. Concerned for her well-being, 911 was called. Emergency services arrived promptly, and Jeanette was taken to the hospital. Everyone who knows Jeanette knew how much she had contributed and missed her that day.

They recognized that Jeanette would want nothing more than for the event to go on. The volunteers gathered themselves, rolled up their sleeves, and pressed on.

“These events would not be possible if it were not for the great volunteers,” Dale Sanders reflected. “We have a great staff. They are dedicated, focused, and have the same vision.”  Dale’s pride was evident, as was his commitment to making each resident feel welcome.

Take-out meals were packed up and coordinated deliveries went to residents unable to leave their homes. No one was forgotten.

“We involve the three parks,” said Evelyn, another dedicated volunteer. “It is so nice to see people come out.”

This was just one highlight in a year-round calendar. The are pool parties, bingo nights, card games, and themed events like their luau.During the busier months, activities include crafts, charity drives, and the annual Senior Olympics with both an opening and closing ceremony.

The three parks area portrait of community at their best.
