Honoring Veterans & Passed Residents

SUSAN SLATER

The  Highlands of Scotland Yard in Dade City celebrated its Third Annual Memorial Day event.

It is a heartfelt occasion dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of veterans. Held on Memorial Day, for these residents, it also includes those who had passed on in the community.

The event began with a
heartfelt prayer led by
Nancy Meech. She reflected on the great
cost of freedom paid by
 “…veterans who gave

not just their lives, but

also the lives they never got to live…” quoting Ronald Reagan.

Following prayer, Lorraine Davenport tossed dirt on the freshly planted tree honoring passed residents. Her husband, Ken Davenport, Korean War Army Veteran and Lifetime Elks member, passed in March.

Lee McAndrew recognized Joe Caltagirone, a WWII Air Force veteran with an American flag. Caltagirone will be 102 years old on June 27th. He is related to residents, JoAnna and Joseph Piazza. McAndrew thanked the Sunshine Club for donating the flags.

Later, the community gathered in the clubhouse to further commemorate the day with a shared meal prepared and donated by the residents.

Bob Worth began the gathering with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a heartfelt prayer. He expressed gratitude for the gift of freedom and honored the brave veterans and families whose sacrifices made it possible.

“Their sacrifice reflects the love of Christ, who laid down His life so that we might be eternally free. May we live each day with thankfulness and courage, honoring both their memory and Your Grace.”

The clubhouse tables held dishes of meatballs, casseroles, mac n’ cheese, goulash, salads, and colorful trays of fruits and vegetables. Residents shared not only the food but also their warmth and gratitude, creating an atmosphere of friendship and remembrance.

As the day ended, attendees left with the memory of a truly special occasion.  ©
