Summer Reading Kickoff Party

SUSAN SLATER

A festivestart to an enchanting reading season.

The Zephyrhills Public Library hosted its annual Summer Reading Kickoff Party, marking the official beginning of an exciting season of literary exploration and family-friendly activities. “Once Upon a Summer Reading Quest,” sets a magical tone for the activities ahead. Families can immerse themselves in fairy tale-inspired adventures while engaging in entertaining and educational experiences.

This year’s celebration was moved indoors due to rain, but the weather did little to dampen the spirits of the families. New and old faces filled the two rooms of games, bubbles, and a visit from a local mascot.

Despite the initial slower pace, the event picked up as more families arrived.

One of the charming aspects of the party was how it welcomed children who came to the library unaware of the event. These impromptu visitors quickly became part of the celebration, diving into the games and activities with enthusiasm.

Joshua Newland, one of the children, was particularly immersed in the sandbox until “Red,” the cheerful Red Robin Mascot, made an appearance to greet the crowd, adding a touch of surprise to the event.

One of the highlights was the appearance of “Red,” the Red Robin Mascot. He greeted the children. handed out bookmarks and posed for photos. The children list five books on their bookmark they have read for a free kid’s meal at Red Robin.

Dee Thompson, Service Manager, provided specialty lemonades for the children. With flavors like “Freckle,” a refreshing strawberry lemonade, and “Purple,” a unique desert pear concoction, the beverages were an instant hit.

“Red appears in many places to promote our literacy program,” said Dee Thompson, who goes above and beyond to reach out to the children and families to keep them reading and engaged.

Jessica Pruitt does a fantastic job every year of running the summer reading program. She was on hand to inform families of the activities for the summer. “Participants record 600 minutes on the beanstalk app to be eligible for a gift card drawing. Events are going on summer for all ages and there are prizes at the events,” Jessica said. “There is a didgeridoo concert, magicians, puppet show, Police K-9 and more.

Tweens will love fairy tale themed craft events while two summer dances are planned and along with interactive Storytime for toddlers and preschoolers.”

Tweens aged nine and up will have the opportunity to explore fairy tale symbolism and dive into creative projects. These gatherings are designed to inspire curiosity and creativity among older children. Projects include crafting dreamcatchers, mythical creatures, flower crafts, and mirror crafts, all aligned with the enchanting theme.

The Zephyrhills Public Library is committed to making this summer one to remember through its thoughtfully curated programs and activities.

Families can pick up a flyer from the library or visit its website for detailed schedules and updates. The combination of interactive storytelling, themed crafts, high-energy dance parties, and creative discussions promise something for everyone. ©
