Shady Oaks Unique Golf Cart Races at Annual Field Day
Games, Food and Fun with Community Spirit and Guts.
By Susan Slater
Residents of Shady Oaks gathered in the field for the much-anticipated games, laughter, and friendly competition.
Their Field Day event features a variety of games; traditional favorites such as Lawn Yahtzee, Darts, and Jenga, Washer Toss and Ladder Golf which offer a mix of skill and luck.
The highlight of the day was driving a golf cart blindfolded through a course of twists and turns. It is no easy feat. The driver must rely entirely on their passenger's directions to navigate the path, avoid obstacles, and complete the course in the shortest time possible.
One driver veered off into the woods, another sped through like a NASCAR driver. Most took a more cautious and calculated approach. Communication was not always clear, therefore quite challenging and lots of laughs.
Prizes were awarded to the first, second, and third-place winners, as well as a special “Good Try” award. This year, the first place went to Jane and Jim, who completed the course in an impressive 1:53. Don and Elicia secured second place with a time of 2:04, followed closely by Tina and Beth at 2:06. The “Good Try” award was given to the hilarious duo of Roland and Sandy, who was blindfolded and directed by a very animated Roland. His enthusiastic and often confusing directions added to the humor of the situation.
After the races, the afternoon continued with pulled pork sandwiches, chips, and refreshing drinks. The atmosphere was further livened up by the tunes of resident DJ Alicia Plummer, who played a mix of music for people to dance to.
The Annual Field Day at Shady Oaks is more than just a day of games; it is a celebration of the simple pleasures of life that capture the spirit of Shady Oaks, where community and fun go hand in hand.
