Sundance’s Helping Hand Program

Sundance’s  Helping Hand Program

Fostering Community Through Compassion and Outreach

By Susan Slater

Members of Sundance’s Sunshine Club, HOA and other residentsOHOHo are supporting neighbors in need offoodand connection when experiencing hardship or isolation.  Guided byApril Blackman and supported by a dedicated teamof volunteers, this initiative is a testament to the power of kindness and community spirit.

The first Tuesday of each month, the program offers a hot meal. This meal serves as an avenue for social connection. Those who prefer to receive food at home--whether due to living with disabilities, grieving the loss of a loved one, or simply unable to cook--are accommodated with home deliveries. The fourth Tuesday is dedicated to grocery deliveries.

The grocery bags can contain lunch meats, bread, snacks, fruit, vegetables, canned tuna, and more depending on the donations. Residents also donate $10 gift cards, to purchase over-the-counter meds or add to their groceries. The grocery bags also includean activity calendar toencourage participation in ice cream socials, bistro meals with varied menus, live music, bingo nights, and more.

Blackman emphasizes that the true mission extends beyond providing food. “The program aims to provide emotional support to residents,” she explains. For new residents, meals serve as an ideal introduction to the community, helping them make new friendships and find their place within the neighborhood.

The Helping Hands program also organizes workshops to address health and wellness, home safety and community resources. They also want to educate residents ongrowing their own vegetables. The Kind Hearts program will assist with minor household repairs.

On average, the program serves between 25 and 38 residents each week, and up to 36 regular recipients during peak seasons.

Residents wanting to receive assistance, refer neighbors, volunteer, or donate are encouraged to connect with the program through the library form or by speaking with program leaders.
